Welcome
In order to perfect his elocution, Demosthenes, one of the greatest orators of the ancient world, pronounced difficult expressions with pebbles in his mouth and attempted to speak over the breaking waves of the Aegean Sea. Demostenes Language Centre has drawn upon his example, acknowledging those factors of greatest importance for learners of a language: belief in human ability, enthusiasm and motivation, and flair in achieving the goal set. We have been sharing our experience since 1991, translating it into the results and satisfaction gained by our students!
Since 1991 we have taught English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian and Italian, among other languages. As part of our provision of a comprehensive language teaching service we exercise complete control over the organisation and realisation of the course, accompanying this with continuous support and methodological supervision. We always analyse your needs in detail and, as a result, Demostenes offers a guarantee of effectiveness in teaching. In addition, our students have complete confidence in areas such as teacher qualifications and selection of teaching materials.
Demostenes belongs to that group of elite schools granted a licence to conduct international language examinations recognised and popular all over the world. Demostenes is an Examination Centre for LCCI IQ (English), TELC (English, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian) and Trinity (English). We also provide preparation for the Cambridge ESOL examinations (FCE, CAE, CPE and BEC), TOLES and ILEC (English), DELE (Spanish), PLE (Portuguese), DELF (French), CELI (Italian) and the examinations of the Goethe-Institut (ZD, ZMP and ZOP). The certificates obtained by our students very often constitute 'passports to employment' at firms both Polish and international.

Demostenes – professionalism and experience at the best of prices
The first meeting
Demostenes invites you to its head office, located in the centre of the city at 46c Ruska Street. It is here that our cosy classrooms are to be found, along with our library and multimedia room. It is here too that you will meet the many great individuals who, like you, are learning together with Demostenes. Everything begins with a test and interview, by means of which we learn your expectations and abilities. The result is selection of the very best programme, adapted to your needs, abilities and age.
Our teachers
Guaranteeing the effective realisation of the training programme is our professional team of teachers, qualified as they are with regard to both language and methodology. This specialised staff is selected according to programme, whether it be secondary school graduation, exam preparation, specialist language or for children. Our teachers, drawn from Poland and abroad, are competent, patient and open to all, able to discern the individual language needs of each course participant and adapt their teaching techniques as appropriate. Knowledge is transmitted in a manner precise and attractive, with our students able to appraise their classes by means of anonymous questionnaires. Continuous methodological supervision ensures high quality teaching, while teaching takes place in cosy classrooms with a friendly atmosphere.
Teaching methods
The selection of methods and techniques utilised at Demostenes is dependent on course programme and given unit, as well as the language ability and predispositions of the students. We apply an eclectic approach, taking advantage of the very widest palette of exercises, along with diverse audio-visual resources. Particular emphasis is placed on development of vocabulary and refinement of speaking skills. During their lessons the teachers set up and manage the kinds of language situations encountered in everyday life. This variation in teaching method means students at Demostenes have no chance to become bored, while learning is effective and brings satisfaction.
Classes
Classes are conducted in manageable groups, of up to six learners in the case of a small group and up to 12 in the case of a standard group. This enables an individual approach to be taken to each participant. Lessons above beginner level are taken in turn by two teachers, one a Polish native and one a native speaker of the target language.
Variety is added to classes by the frequent use of audio-visual aids and by means of additional teaching materials drawn up by our teachers. Utilised to this end are sources such as the press, television and the Internet.
We offer morning, afternoon and evening courses in several variants: Monday-Wednesday, Tuesday-Thursday, Monday-Thursday, Wednesday-Friday and Saturday. Intensity is also variable, with from two to six hours of lessons weekly.
Teaching materials
We take advantage of a wealth of prepared teaching materials, coursebooks from reputable publishing houses and our own content drawn up by the teachers on the basis of sources of contemporary language use, whether the Internet, the press or television. For purchase of a coursebook at a language bookshop our students receive a 15% discount voucher.
Demostenes 'after hours'
We encourage enthusiasts to pursue supplementary forms of learning. Our students are able to benefit from individual consultations free of charge, at which a Polish teacher resolves doubts regarding grammar or a native speaker leads conversation. In addition, we invite you to our lending library of books and magazines, for film screenings in the original and for individual computer classes with the opportunity to access the Internet.
